Passport Seva kendra – My experience

In Bangalore, there are 2 Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)  offices – one at Lalbagh and the other in Sai Arcade (exactly opposite to Intel) in outer ring road.

My husband and I went together for re-issuing our passports. At first (as always), we did  a lot of research on the net before we went there and we found a lot of useful content on what documents were to be taken beforehand to avoid problems.

The prerequisite:

1) The first step is to create an account for yourself at PSK portal. The portal is very easy to use.

2) Fill out the online application form correctly and submit the same in the PSK portal.

You may face a problem while filling the online application. The number of characters for house address is limited, so this may mean that you will enter only half address information. That is okay. you can fill up half and then go the PSK in person and ask the personnel to change it for you.

3) Immediately after you submit the application, book an appropriate appointment time. This will ensure you have the earliest slot.

4) Get a list of mandatory and optional documents from the portal and also confirm the same after calling the toll-free number listed in the portal.

A general set of documents that helped me are

  • Degree certificate (you can carry 10th, 12th as well; safety sake)
  • Ration Card & Gas connection Voucher/Electricity Bill/BSNL phone bill/ IT acknowledgement
  • If you are carrying a company letter head, please carry your office ID card as well.
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Affidavit (In case of name change etc)
  • your Passport (Old passports), your spouse’s passport (especially for a lady, it is better to take husband’s passport along)

5) Take a photocopy (preferably 2 copies) of the aforementioned documents and scan each one of them.

6) Upload 4 of these scanned documents (mandatory ones) online in the PSK portal.

7) Take a printout of the appointment sheet.

Please Note: One thing you constantly need to keep doing is check if there is a vacant slot of time so that you can advance the appointment time. In our case, initially we had got a slot on 14-Sep-2010, but we monitored regularly for free slots and by God’s grace, we found a slot on 31-Aug-2010.

The Finale:

The PSK Office and Surroundings….

Today we finally went to the Passport Seva Kendra in Sai Arcade. This is exactly opposite the Intel Office on the Outer Ring Road. For an appointment slot of 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM, we both reached by 9:15 AM. The parking is a little away from the building but once the vehicle is parked, you can directly enter through the back gate.

It was pretty good to see that the Security did not allow us to enter inside the PSK office until it was the alloted time, thus ensuring manageable crowd. (We read that its better to go very early. The bane of reading a lot of online reviews, sigh! we had to wait at least 1.5 hrs).  We had to spend our time standing as there is no seating arrangement out there. We explored the area nearby and found that there is no good place for breakfast/tea outside.

Finally at 10:45, the Security announced that the 11:15 slot folks can submit the forms.

Inside the PSK office…..

Once you are in there,  it will take about an hour and a half. Everything went on smooth and for those who forgot to photocopy a few things, there is a photocopy counter inside the office  itself.

All in all, it was a good experience for us and we both came out before 1:00 PM. The only thing that can cause worry is if you are missing original documents.

Please take the originals along with the photocopy so that you will not be sent back to fetch the same. Avoid rework, save energy, save fuel 🙂 ….

Take care.

Addendum:

Atul commented on this post and I really thought that this has to be part of the content of this post. Thanks again Atul, for taking the time to note this 🙂

Atul would like to add few points here:

——————————————————————–
1. There is no walk in at PSK located opposite to Intel office. You have to submit your passport application online and take appointment for available day and time.
2. It is not necessary to scan the documents and upload. At “counter-A”, they will scan required documents and upload. There is no need to carry photo with you. They have camera also at all of the “A-counters”. They will take photo there and upload. You will have to pay fees at this counter.
3. Your original documents are checked at “counter-B”.
4. I am not sure what is done at “counter-c”. The lady there checked my old passport and kept on looking at her computer for some minutes and then let me go.
5 Collect you acknowledgment near the exit section by showing your fees-receipt (don’t forget to collect it at “Counter-A”) and you are ready to leave.
6. Apart from photocopier, there is provision for baby care also. You can also buy tea/coffee/snacks while waiting.

Overall, it was a pleasing experience to apply for a passport at this place- very different from an usual government office.

I would second Atul’s thoughts and say that my experience at the PSK was excellent. Thumbs up to TCS and to Govt for this initiative.

  1. Thanks for this information, Deepa. Very useful. I’m planning to get my passport re-issued too and I’ve got the appointment at Sai Arcade. I wanted to know how did it take for you to get your passport back? The portal says it will take 3 days from the date of submission of physical documents. Is that true? Did you receive your passport in 3 days time?

    Waiting for your response.

    Thanks,
    Shirley

    • Hi Shirley,

Murali (lucky chap) received his passport in 5 days (2 days holiday on account of festival) and there was no police verification required for him. So, 5 days and he had the complete passport ready to be stamped.

My passport arrived in about 6 days and a person from the police department came in after 12 days (since applying for re-issue of the passport). It was mentioned 25 days for the verification, but within 12 days the verification was done. I will shortly write another post for the document required for police verification.

      • hi Deepa,

I just wanted to know did you paid any bribe to the police for verification, if yes how much? I want to know how much i need to pay the guy, if required, as I too have applied for passport recently. I am still waiting for the police verification 😦

        thanks in advance.
        Anand

      • Lucky you! I went to the office on 1st Oct and till now I’ve not received my passport. 😦
Also last week police verification was done. It was supposed to be post police verification. But that is now done and no passport in sight!

      • In that case, it is better that you call up the toll free number and confirm. You will also be able to see the status of your passport online (passport dispatched/being checked etc). The other aspect is that the passport arrives by Speed post and this passport will be delivered only to person who has applied (not even to relatives). So check with your area post office if they have received your passport.

  2. Thanks for the useful post. It really helped me plan for my appointment properly. I would like to add few points here:

  3. I had the appointment on 5 Jan 2011…got the passport reissued and delivered on 10 Jan 2011…fast isnt it….however the photo taken at the PSK is somehow not clear..which may cause a problem while travelling …always insist on getting a clear picture ..a closer view….
Please carry your degree certificate …not just highest degree..pls carry BE ..MBA Bcom Bsc SSLC PUC whatever you have since you may be sent back…just in case …keep all documents in your bag…safe isnt it??

    • Yeah, I also found it very fast. As far as the photo is concerned, mine has come ok… Now-a-days they use the webcam and that may pose a problem if the photo isn’t clear.

Certificates… yes, its better to carry most documents. Photocopy is not a worry at all as there is a store to photocopy inside the Seva Kendra office.

  4. Hi Deepa

Can you please help me getting to know the different current status of passport at PSK website . Also how much time passport will take at your house after police verification

    Thanks
    Anand

    • >> Can you please help me getting to know the different current status of passport at PSK website.
You can call up the toll free center and easily find out the status. On the website too, you can view the status.

      >> Also how much time passport will take at your house after police verification
I had applied for re-issue and I had received the passport before the police verification. I received it within a week. In some cases, the passport is issued only after police verification. In that case, I am not sure how long it might take. It really depends on when the police come for verification.

  5. hi … is there any vacant slot in april 2011 in dfa appointment…
maybe there are few who can not go to their scheduled given by
    dfa…

    • You need to look at the appointment calendar, and keep on a lookout if you get a date much earlier. We had done the same. Initially we had got a date which was 2 months ahead, we kept looking at the appointment website and one day we found 2 slots in the same month, so we advanced our appointment. I suggest you to do the same.

  6. You can only be a TCS employee to applaud the service provided by PSK and its crappy junk servers maintained by TCS. Tough to get a slot at any point of time. All the time website says, website is under maintenance. Total waste of time. Finally was able to get the slot by refreshing the site page and entering captcha’s over and over for 10 mins. This sucks big time also to TCS servers.
This is all about my experience PSK.

    • Well, I am sorry you faced a lot of trouble with the PSK. Even though I am not a TCS employee, I can say that my experience was good. I had been to the PSK last year. I am not sure if their service has changed a lot since then. May be you would like to write down your recent experience with the folks. I would be happy to create an update post stating your experience.

      • Thanks for the article, Deepa Kini !!

Yes the servers are problematic and it required login multiple times to get through my online appointment process. As some may not know and which is not mentioned in older articles(things have changed a bit), the APPOINTMENTS SLOTS ARE RELEASED TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE everyday from 6PM. Try anytime before 7pm you should get through. This is happening because too many people all over India are trying at the same time. TCS has done a good job but requires improvements especially peak-hour server management, as number of people applying for passport are exponentially rocketing, I think. Also, there were many documents apart from the ones mentioned on their website, you may need to carry which required me to go there second time. Also, their webcam photography is not upto the mark,as many have observed.

I also advise passport aspirants in Bangalore to visit and read the article at following URL and the following comments there which helped me
        Url : http://yummyfood-khusi.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-passport-experience.html

  7. Hi sister

  8. Hi there!…I am applying for a fresh passport this week.I wanted to know when does the police verification take place?as in,in which phase of this entire procedure…

  9. Hi all,
I am applying for a visa for Greece. For that I need the Police Clearance Certification(PCC). Now my Passport had been issued from West Bengal & my flight for Greece would be from Bangalore. So naturally I need the Clearance both from Bangalore & my home state. Can anybody give me an idea how long this whole process of Bagalore Passport offc –> Police station(of my current address in Banglore)–> Banglor passport offc–>West Bengal passport offc–>West bengal PS –> West Bengal passport offc –> Bangalor passport offc–> me, would take ??

  10. Adding this here since your blog comes up when searching for PSK experience 🙂

Though it doesn’t say so on the website, for minors (even 1 year old infants!!) it is mandatory to carry BOTH parents’ passports in original (along with copies, of course).

The service has drastically deteriorated since the blog was written in 2010. In 2012, it is almost impossible to get an appointment at a PSK. There are two reasons for it: one, the website uses a moronic fastest-finger first approach to make the booking. Even after you select a slot, it is not “locked” so by the time you finish an unnecessary captcha, the slot is gone. Two, related to one, is that unlike US embassy or other non-retarded life forms, Indian PSK releases just a few appointments at exactly 6PM everyday for next 1 or 2 days. This creates an artificial supply constraint. You may call it a bug, but it seems a ‘smart’ design.

The flip side is that touts have a cozy arrangement with PSK by which they can get you “offline” appointments for a fee. This is probably the REASON why the website is deliberately designed to thwart genuine users.

  11. Thank you Deepa, for the information, you have provided for applying PP. Really, very helpful to all…again thanks a lot.

  12. Hi Deepa,
police verification is done 15 days ago.
The status is still “verification report has been sent SP office”.
The person in SP office says we have send it to bareilly.
what should be next status or is there any status between verification sent and passport dispatched?
    please help.
    Thanks.

  13. this is a awsome piece of information, I had come to know about your website from my friend vinod, indore,i have read the posts of yours by now, and let me tell you, your blog gives the best and the most interesting information which provides with the personal experience and also the prerequisites that are required for the passport applicants. This is just the kind of information that i had been looking for and once again hats off to you! Thanks a ton once again

  14. Thank You, for the valuable article, It helped a lot especially the documents which i had carry !

  15. I don’t know how I fond you blog but I just have one word for you..eh, maybe 2 words.. Thank you!! I’ve got the right information at the right time. BTW, I’m in the middle of filling my passport application now. Thanks again. Om!

  16. hi am going to apply my passport now and I filled all application here it is showing that in my passport they are going to put my present address but it is my pg address it may change any time so can anyone help me out that what to do and is that address is that much important

  17. My appointment was fixed for 14-3-2017. submitted all the documents and exited alonwith the acknowledgment in less than 1. 1/2 hour. Paid for SMS service. 17th day since then, there seems no progress, it is still ‘being processed in the passport office’. Did not get any communication either in the form of SMS or email.

  18. Hi Deepa, I would like to provide one piece of information to this very elaborate guide that you have put up.
I carried e-bill printout of my telephone connection, but since it was not stamped and signed by BSNL folks, the PSK at Sai Archade did not accept it as present address proof. Luckily I had my gas connection copy which got accepted. [because I followed your advice to carry all possible proofs 🙂 Thanks for the tip!]
